IGCSE Practice: Fist Language English
In the language class, we did some IGCSE practice for the exam. Here I upload one of the mocks I did.
Re-read the description of:
(a) Elsie Clinch in paragraph 3, begginning with 'Elsie Cinch stomped...'
(b) the road in paragraph 8, begginning with 'Eventually, the plains gave way..'
Select words and phrases from these descriptions, and explain how the writer has created effects by using this language.
When talking about Elsie Clinch and her personality, it is extremely clear how the author use variated vocabulary to describe her. At first, he says Elsie Clinch "stomped down the steps" and "sweeping imperviously". These two phrases show how imperative and brave she is because of the way in which she acts. Moreover, through the phrase "widly gesticulating" we get to know that she is a very expressive person. However, a little bit exagerated. The author is trying to show how strong her personality is even by her way of talking and facial expressions. Furthermore, in other phrases like "Her head went up" and "looking deflated, clearly defeated" the author portrays her as a straight and corageous woman. Another phrase that also shows these same effects the author wants to create is "launched a second attack". This phrase could also convey how optimist she is as she wants to be right about what she is "fighting" for.
As regards the descriptions of the road, we can perfectly understand how deplorable and destroyed it is. Beginning with "rocky foothills" we already get to know that the road is in regrettable conditions. In addition, by phrases like "road which snaked skywards" and "the bus was thrown from side to side by protruding rocks", the author portrays how risky and dangerous the road is as a consequence of its miserable conditions. What is more, through the phrases "vigorous weeds" and "road surface deteriorated" we get to know that the road is in terrible conditions and it is quite complex and difficult to ride it. Finally, when the author says "ensure that they had bottled water for the gorge walk" we can asume that the place could be humid and very hot, so they may need water to stand the arid weather.
